The short version: both are established American water heater brands with full tank, tankless and heat pump lineups. Bradford White sells only through professional plumbers and builds its tanks around corrosion and sediment control. Rheem sells both through contractors and on retail shelves, which makes it easy to find. For most homes the install matters more than the badge, and the right choice comes down to your fuel, your space and your water.

"Bradford White or Rheem?" is one of the most common questions we get when a tank is on its way out. We install and service both brands across Asheville and Western NC, and we are a Bradford White Pro Partner, so here is the honest comparison we give homeowners on the job, including where that partnership shapes our view.

How Each Brand Is Sold

Bradford White sells its water heaters only through professional plumbers. You cannot buy one off a big-box shelf, and the company built that model so its units get installed by licensed hands. The practical result is a lineup weighted toward contractor-grade models and a parts and support system aimed at plumbers. Rheem sells through both channels: professional lines through plumbing supply houses and contractors, and retail lines at home improvement stores. That makes a Rheem easy to buy on a Saturday, but it also means two Rheem tanks that look alike can be built to different specifications. When you compare quotes, compare model numbers, not just the brand name.

Tank Construction: Linings, Anodes and Sediment

Every steel storage tank lives or dies by corrosion. Both brands glass-line the inside of the tank and use a sacrificial anode rod that corrodes so the tank does not. Bradford White's lining is called Vitraglas, and many of its models use a Hydrojet inlet that churns incoming cold water to slow sediment buildup on the tank floor. That matters here: well water and harder water across Buncombe and Henderson Counties drop more minerals, and sediment is what causes the popping and rumbling that comes before many tank failures. Rheem tanks are glass-lined with anode protection too, and its higher-tier models add their own sediment features. With either brand, an annual flush and a periodic anode check do more for tank life than the logo does.

Gas Safety and Venting

Residential atmospheric gas water heaters sold today must meet the flammable vapor ignition resistance standard, which keeps fumes from a spilled solvent or gas can from igniting at the burner. Bradford White's version is the Defender Safety System; Rheem's gas tanks meet the same standard with their own design. Both brands offer atmospheric and power-vent gas models, so the venting your home already has, or can take, often narrows the choice more than the brand does.

Heat Pump (Hybrid) Options

If you are replacing an electric tank, a heat pump water heater is worth a look. Bradford White's line is AeroTherm and Rheem's is ProTerra. Both pull heat from the surrounding air to warm the tank and use far less electricity than a standard electric tank, and both need enough air volume around the unit and a condensate drain. We cover where a hybrid will and will not work on our hybrid heat pump water heaters page.

Warranty and Parts

Warranty terms for both brands depend on the specific model, so read the coverage for the exact unit you are quoted. What protects you in practice is registration: the warranty should be registered at install, and that step is easy to miss on a DIY or unpermitted job. On parts, Bradford White's professional channel means plumbers who carry the brand tend to stock its common parts. Rheem parts are widely available through supply houses. As a Pro Partner, we keep common Bradford White parts on the truck, so many repairs finish on the first visit.

Which One Fits Your Home

Bradford White tends to fit when:

  • You are on well water or harder water and want the most built-in help against sediment and corrosion
  • You want a contractor-grade tank installed and registered by a licensed plumber
  • You want local parts support from the plumber who installed it

Rheem tends to fit when:

  • You want a specific Rheem model or feature, such as its ProTerra heat pump line
  • You are matching other Rheem equipment already in the home
  • Availability matters most and the right professional-grade model is in stock locally

Either way, size the tank to your household's real demand, not the label on the old unit, and get the venting, expansion tank and drain pan right. If your current heater is showing trouble, our guide to the signs your water heater is failing helps you decide whether it is a repair or a replacement.

Our Take as a Bradford White Pro Partner

We are a Bradford White Pro Partner, so it is fair to say we know that lineup best, and we like it for this region because corrosion and sediment are what end tanks here. We also install and service Rheem and will tell you when it is the better fit.
