Signs Your Drain Needs Cleaning

Most drain failures give you warning weeks before they back up entirely. Watch for these signs and call before a slow drain becomes a full backup with water on the floor:

Professional drain cleaning service clearing a clogged household drain
Hydro jetting equipment used to scour buildup from drain pipes
  • Slow drainage in a sink, tub, or shower that takes longer to empty than it used to
  • Gurgling sounds from drains when water runs elsewhere in the house
  • Persistent foul odors rising from a drain even after cleaning the basin
  • Multiple fixtures backing up at once - typically a main line issue, not a single trap
  • Water around floor drains in the basement or laundry when an upstairs fixture drains
  • Recurring clogs in the same drain even after you've cleaned the trap or used a snake
  • Sewage smell outside the house near a clean-out or where the lateral runs

Any single sign means a professional clean-out is worth scheduling. Two or more signs together usually mean a main line problem or a developing sewer issue, and waiting almost always makes the repair larger.

Hydro Jetting vs. Snaking - Which Does Your Drain Need?

The two main professional drain-cleaning methods aren't interchangeable. Picking the right one saves money and prevents the repeat call:

FactorSnaking (Cable Auger)Hydro Jetting
What it doesBreaks through a localized blockageScours the inside of the pipe wall
Best forSingle fixture trap clog, hair, small obstructionsGrease, scale, soft tree roots, recurring buildup
Lasting effectRestores flow but leaves residue on pipe wallsReturns the pipe close to original interior diameter
Not appropriate forSevere blockage or compromised pipe wallsPipes with structural cracks or collapsed sections

We typically start with a sewer camera inspection on recurring or main-line problems. The camera tells us which method works - jetting a cracked clay lateral can make the damage worse, while snaking through hardened scale wastes a service call.

Sewer Camera Inspection

For drains that keep clogging after a clean-out, a sewer camera removes the guesswork. We push a self-leveling camera through the line, identify the cause - tree root intrusion, pipe belly, foreign object, collapsed clay tile, scale buildup - and recommend the appropriate fix. The inspection is also worth doing before buying an older Asheville-area home so you know what's in the lateral before closing.

WNC angle: Asheville's red clay soil presses tree roots into older lateral lines, and homes built before about 1970 frequently still have cast iron drain pipes with interior scale. A camera tells you which it is in 20 minutes.

Recurring vs. One-Time Cleaning

A first-time clog usually needs a one-shot clean-out. A drain that clogs again within months is telling you something - either the line has a structural issue, the buildup pattern indicates the wrong method was used last time, or household habits are working against it. We recommend an annual jetting on commercial kitchens, restaurants, and homes with documented root intrusion; everyone else can wait for symptoms.

What NOT to Put Down Your Drain

About 80% of the kitchen drain clogs we clear could have been prevented by keeping these out of the sink:

  • Cooking grease, bacon fat, butter - they liquefy when hot, then re-solidify and coat the pipe wall
  • Coffee grounds - they don't dissolve, they accumulate
  • Egg shells - the membrane catches on everything else
  • Pasta, rice, oatmeal - they swell with water and form a paste
  • Flour - mixes with water into glue
  • Stringy vegetables (celery, asparagus, corn husks) - wrap around garbage disposal blades and pipe joints
  • "Flushable" wipes - despite the name, they do not break down like toilet paper
  • Chemical drain cleaners on a recurring clog - they burn the inside of older cast iron pipes

Drain Cleaning FAQs - Buncombe & Henderson Counties

Drain clearing breaks through whatever's blocking flow right now - a snake punches a hole through the clog so water moves again. Drain cleaning removes the buildup coating the inside of the pipe so the line returns to something close to its original interior diameter. Hydro jetting is true cleaning; snaking is clearing.

Most homes don't need a scheduled clean - they need service when symptoms appear. The exceptions: documented tree-root intrusion in the lateral (annual or twice-yearly jet), commercial kitchens with heavy grease (quarterly or annually), older Asheville homes with cast iron drains showing repeat slow drainage (annual is reasonable).

For grease buildup, scale, and recurring clogs, yes - it clears what a snake leaves behind and the result lasts longer. For a single localized obstruction, no - a snake handles it for less money. We'll tell you on the phone which one fits your situation before we dispatch.

Two common WNC reasons. First, red clay soil shifts with rainfall and presses tree roots into older clay or cast iron laterals. Second, pre-1970 Asheville-area homes often have cast iron drain pipes with hardened scale that a snake can't remove. A sewer camera inspection identifies which problem you have and rules out structural damage that needs repair, not just cleaning.
