The short version: there is no single price for a water heater install, because the cost is set by the type of heater, the fuel it uses, the venting and gas work involved, and whether your existing setup meets current code. A straight electric tank swap is the least expensive job; a first-time tankless install is the most, because of the gas line sizing, venting, and condensate work it adds. The only honest way to get a real number is a written quote for your specific home - which we provide before any work begins.

What Determines the Cost of a Water Heater Installation

When we quote a water heater in Asheville, the price comes down to a handful of factors, roughly in order of impact:

  • Type of water heater - a standard storage tank, a tankless (on-demand) unit, or a hybrid heat pump heater. These are three different jobs, not three prices for the same job.
  • Fuel source - electric, natural gas, or propane. Switching fuel types (for example, going from electric to gas) adds gas line and venting work that a like-for-like swap does not.
  • Venting and gas work - tankless and gas units need proper venting and correctly sized gas lines. If the existing vent or gas line is undersized, that work gets added.
  • Code upgrades - an expansion tank, a new T&P discharge line, a drain pan, seismic strapping, or an updated shutoff may be required to bring the install up to current code, especially in older homes.
  • Removal and disposal - hauling away the old unit, which we include.
  • Accessibility - a heater in a tight attic or crawlspace takes longer to remove and set than one in an open garage or basement.

We charge a straightforward $79 dispatch fee for a service call, and it is waived when you move forward with the recommended work. You get a written, flat-rate quote before we start, so the price you approve is the price you pay.

Tank vs. Tankless vs. Hybrid - Where the Money Goes

The type you choose has the biggest effect on both the upfront install and what you pay to run it over the years:

  • Storage tank - lowest upfront cost, especially for a like-for-like electric or gas swap. Shorter lifespan (typically 8 to 12 years) and higher standby energy loss because it keeps a full tank hot continuously, even when no one is using it.
  • Tankless - highest upfront cost, particularly on a first-time conversion, because of gas sizing, venting, and condensate drainage. In return you get endless hot water, a small footprint, and a longer service life (often 15 to 20 years).
  • Hybrid heat pump - higher upfront cost than a plain tank, but the most energy-efficient option to run. It needs a conditioned space with enough air volume and clearance, so it is not a fit for every closet.

Permits in Buncombe and Henderson County

A water heater replacement is a permitted job in this area. That is a good thing for you as a homeowner - a permit means an inspector verifies the install meets code for gas, venting, and pressure relief. We handle the permit as part of the job. Be wary of any installer who skips the permit to shave the price; an unpermitted gas or water heater install can create problems with your homeowner's insurance and when you sell the home.

Why a Water Heater Is Not a DIY Job

Big-box stores sell water heaters as a weekend project, but the failure modes are serious. A gas unit vented incorrectly can put carbon monoxide into the home. A tank without a working T&P valve or expansion tank becomes a pressure hazard. And a leak on a botched connection can cause thousands in water damage. A licensed install gets the gas, venting, and pressure relief right and comes with a workmanship guarantee. Our P1 Master Plumbers install and warranty the full Bradford White lineup and also install and service Rheem, A.O. Smith, Navien, Rinnai, Noritz, and other major brands.
