What causes sewer lines to become damaged?
Generally speaking, sewer lines are buried 18 to 30 inches below the ground. In places where freezing temperatures may cause pipes to freeze and crack, sewer lines may be buried up to six feet below the ground’s surface. You know what else lies below the ground’s surface? Tree roots. And they’re attracted to the warm vapor given off by waste water in your sewer line. In many instances, tree roots comfortably nuzzle themselves against your plumbing until they crack and break your pipes. Toxic relationship we have here.
Corrosion is another thing that causes sewer lines to need repair. Although steel and cast iron pipes are galvanized to prevent rusting, minerals from hard water can accumulate and cause corrosion. Left unattended, corrosion can lead to leaking and cracking pipes. Flushing things other than toilet paper and human waste may cause your sewer pipes to fail as well. In the kitchen, grease, oil, and food scraps can have a similar effect.
How can I avoid damaging my sewer lines?
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and investing in regular sewer line maintenance and repair is one of the best ways to keep your sewer lines happy and in good repair. My Plumbers LLC provides sewer line cleaning and sewer camera inspections to help your sewer pipes last longer.
Inside the home, never wash fat or oil down the drain. Though liquid when heated, these substances solidify when cooled and can cause clogs in your sewer lines. Also, be conservative with your use of the garbage disposal. Dispose only of approved food products and thoroughly flush the unit with water after each use. Be sure to use drain covers in the kitchen and bathroom to catch any debris.
You can’t really do much about established trees and their roots near your sewer line. However, avoid planting what will become large trees near where your pipes are buried. Similarly, always call 811 before you dig. Failure to do so may result in accidental ruptures.
How can I tell if my sewer line needs repair?
Unlike other types of leaks, damaged sewer lines are pretty showy. A flooded and foul smelling yard is a good indication that you need sewer line repair. A general smell of sewage might be another sign. This happens as gasses from the damaged line surface. Gurgling toilets, slow draining sinks, water stains on floors and walls, and mold growth can also hint at the presence of a sewer line leak.
Who can I call?

Besides polluting your property and the environment, a sewer line leak can increase the presence of pests, foul smelling odors, and increase the likelihood of mold and mildew growth. Don’t risk it. When you need sewer line repair, you need My Plumbers LLC. 828-708-7107 is the number to call.

Our downstairs toilet started overflowing late on a Friday afternoon while I was showering. After being alerted to the problem, I got out mid-shower to discover that our sewer was backing up. We called 4 different plumbers to try to find somebody that could come help with our plumbing emergency, and My Plumbers was the ONLY company to respond.
I'm glad they were the ones who agreed to help, because they were SO great! Not only did they come within one hour of me calling on a Friday afternoon, they were also super professional and skilled at their job. A couple hours later and the problem was fixed and we were able to get back to our weekend.
I highly recommend My Plumbers if you are looking for a professional, skilled plumber at a fair price. They really helped us out of a very stressful situation.
